The macula is highly sensitive central area in the back of the eye whose main function is to enable us to see in fine detail. Macula degeneration is a condition that affects the macula in one or both eyes, causing disruption to central detailed vision. The vision can become blurred or distorted causing difficulty with reading or looking at close objects. It can also affect distance vision, like driving or recognising people's faces.

There are two main types, Dry ARMD and Wet ARMD . . .

DRY ARMD

The most common type of ARMD, accounting for approximately 90% of cases. This is generally a slow progressive condition, which can cause no symptoms in the initial stages.

WET ARMD

This can cause a sudden onset of symptoms, but is less common type of the two. This is usually linked to the build up of fluid underneath the surface of the retina that suddenly leaks through the macula area.
