Glaucoma

EYE HEALTH

Glaucoma is a group of conditions where the optic nerve inside the eye is damaged, often associated with raised pressure inside the eye. There are different types of Glaucoma, and often will not cause any symptoms in the early stages.

OPEN ANGLE GLAUCOMA

This is the most common type that develops slowly and does not usually cause noticeable visual symptoms. There is a build up of pressure inside the eye, which slowly causes damage on the optic nerve inside the eye, and can be a lifelong condition.

CLOSED ANGLE GLAUCOMA

This type develops very quickly, normally causing symptoms and requires immediate medical attention, however this is less common.

NORMAL TENSION (OR LOW TENSION) GLAUCOMA

The cause of this glaucoma is still unknown as the pressure inside the eye is usually within the normal range, and does not cause noticeable visual symptoms. Factors for this condition developing include a family history of any type of glaucoma, and even a history of systemic heart disease such as irregular heart rhythm.

Other types of Glaucoma include Congenital Glaucoma or Secondary Glaucoma.
